jbt-weber-i55The Weber Road interchange running through Will and DuPage counties is known by residents and commuters as one of the most heavily congested areas in all of Chicagoland.

A $69.2 million Interstate 55/Weber Road improvement project in Will County is now moving forward, with the first construction projects to be awarded soon. The state of Illinois and Will County are sharing the cost of the project.

The long-awaited construction project had stalled due to a law passed seven years ago, which dedicated the revenue from the sale of surplus land to fund the local government portion of the road project. That land has still not sold so the project was unable to move forward.

But the project can now get underway thanks to a new law, sponsored by Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant (D-Shorewood), which removes the final obstacles and allows it to move forward independent of the sale of the surplus land.

“Will County is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation,” Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant said. “We need roadways that can keep up with population growth and handle increased traffic so that residents and commuters are able to travel safely. This project will help us accomplish that.”
