PLAINFIELD – Families with children dealing with the symptoms of Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections now have more protections when it comes to insurance coverage thanks to a measure being signed into law today.

"If we have the ability, we should take every step possible to help children with whatever situation they face,” State Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant (D-Shorewood) said. “There is treatment for PANDAS and costs should not be the factor that decides whether a child receives treatment.”

PANDAS occurs when a strep infection triggers a misdirected immune response that causes inflammation on a child’s brain. This leads to life-changing personality symptoms. Many children present symptoms of OCD and physical tics when affected by PANDAS.

“This will help families across the state dealing with PANDAS," Bertino-Tarrant said.

The measure passed the Illinois General Assembly with bipartisan support and went into effect when the governor signed the legislation.
