State Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant began her first term as a member of the 98th General Assembly in January 2013.
Bertino-Tarrant is a fourth-generation Will County resident who won the newly created 49th Senate District seat in the November 2012 elections. The new district comprises all or part of Bolingbrook, Crest Hill, Joliet, Oswego, Plainfield, Romeoville and Shorewood.
The senator is a lifelong educator with 18 years of local school district experience, culminating in her current position as the regional school superintendent for Will County.
Impassioned by her history as both an educator and an education advocate, Bertino-Tarrant plans to continue to fight for public schools, education funding and school resources now that she has a seat at the legislative table. She has also been a small-business owner and a constant voice for the small-businesses community through her involvement with the Will County Center for Economic Development, the Joliet Chamber of Commerce and the Wilco Area Career Center.
Not surprisingly, she is committed to strengthening job creation and bolstering the economy through fostering business at the local level.
Bertino-Tarrant’s background in education should serve her well in her position as chair of the Senate's Education Committee. She also serves on the Appropriations II, Labor, Licensed Activities and Pensions and Transportation Committees.
Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant graduated from St. Francis Academy in Joliet before earning a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of St. Francis. In 2007, she completed her doctorate at Loyola University.
In addition to her work as an educator and job creator, Bertino-Tarrant has volunteered her time to the Community Services Council, Troy Educational Foundation Board and has been an active parishioner and former Parish Council President at St. Paul the Apostle Church. She has also served as president of Vista Learning, which provides refurbished computers to recommended students in the Will County area, and has been actively involved in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Will County. Bertino-Tarrant has also participated in various women’s organizations, including the ZONTA International Professional Society and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Woman Educators, and is co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 470 and coach of St. Mary Immaculate Parish School Girls Basketball.
