JBT Hearing PhotoSPRINGFIELD— With the focus on school topics such as education funding, student assessments, and curriculum innovation, State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant (D-Shorewood) has been appointed by Illinois Senate President John J. Cullerton to lead the Illinois Senate’s Education Committee.

“I look forward to leading the Illinois Senate Education Committee during the new General Assembly,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “Working on issues affecting students, educators and schools have been some of my top priorities as a state legislator.”

The Illinois Senate’s Education Committee is tasked with approving or rejecting education-related legislation. Bertino-Tarrant, a lifelong educator and passionate education advocate, was the former Will County regional superintendent before being elected to the Illinois Senate.

“The many issues that come before the Senate Education Committee touch hundreds of thousands of students throughout the state. I look forward to working with the bipartisan committee as we continue to address funding, mandates, and the overall learning environment.”

Bertino-Tarrant replaces outgoing chair State Senator Kimberly Lightford (D-Westchester). The senator is also a member of the state’s bipartisan Education Funding Reform Commission.
