senatefloorSPRINGFIELD — After the Illinois State Senate adopted term limits for Senate leaders, State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant (D-Shorewood) issued the following statement:

“Today we took a step in the right direction by changing Senate rules to allow for limited years of leadership. I am pleased the Senate President listened to the recommendation. I am a firm believer it is best to lead by example."

The term limits plan backed by Bertino-Tarrant would limit the Senate President and Senate Minority Leader to five terms apiece. Terms are for two years, so this would be a 10-year limit.

Today’s action imposes term limits on the Senate President and Minority Leader by Senate Rule. Senator Bertino-Tarrant plans to file her constitutional amendment on implementing term limits for all legislative leaders.
