State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant (D-Shorewood) recently held a Warning Signs of Drug Use Seminar for parents at Drauden Point Middle School.

At the event, Dr. Aaron Weiner, Director of Addiction Services at Linden Oaks Behavioral Health, provided parents with tips on how to recognize if their children may be using drugs.

“I have met many families in our community who have been affected by substance abuse problems,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “Knowing the warning signs of drug use gives parents a better chance of identifying if their child has a problem and getting them help.”

The seminar Bertino-Tarrant hosted follows other efforts the senator has undertaken to combat drug addiction.

Bertino-Tarrant served as the co-chairwoman of the Young Adults Heroin Use Task Force and hosted heroin prevention forums in her district. She also supported House Bill 1, a law designed to comprehensively address the significant increase in heroin and opioid-related overdoses and deaths over the past 10 years.

Bertino-Tarrant also sponsored a law that bans toxic caffeine powder from being sold to anyone under age 18 in Illinois.
